Sambahayang Kristiyano.

This is the apt description of the UGNAYAN by Zeny Avila (one of the founders). Fr.  Roderick Petrie, OFM (who first encouraged the ministry), and Fr. Boniface Hanley, OFM (who originally thought of the first Filipino Mass) ispired the founders to start the community committed to pray together.

However, there is something special, an added quality to the community. It is Filipino in character. It carries wit it traditions, values and traits of the culture. Everyone is a member of one big family. The older members become Nanay, Tatay, Ate or Kuya. Everyone else are brothers and sisters. Everyone is concerned about each other’s welfare. Everyone is “warm, friendly…enjoy life and try to help others find joy in life” (May 19886 Newsletter-Fr. Flavian Walsh, OFM). Most of all, everyone gives”…The gift of themselves…(June 1987 Newsletter-Sis. Margot Lloren) in just about everything or anything they do.

The Family that is Ugnayan

Every occasion is joyful- from every First Friday Mass to the Youth Camp, Christmas Disco, Summer Picnic, Christmas Caroling, the recollections, the Annual Retreats, to service at the Sunday coffee hour after mass.

Si. Mary Lawrence (August 1987 Newsletter) wrote about the group:

“You know how to spread joy and share your Faith. You are fond of celebrations, birthdays, feast days, comings and goings. You are prayerful and know the value of taking out time for quiet space in Retreat.”

Each member of this one big family is enriched by the love and care one receives from or gives to others. This love and care is expressed in various ways and means. Primary are the religious activities as the First Friday Devotion to the Sacred Heart, the Recollections and the Annual Retreats. Other ways in sharing this love and care is through the social activities mentioned above.
